Thoughts from a novice spearo!
Moving to NZ from the UK 8 years ago, spearfishing in the abundant marine life of NZ was one of those activities I always intended to do but never quite got around to. Recently, Dive HQ ran a spearfishing night where I finally had the opportunity to try some gear in their pool, learn what to do and meet experienced divers.
Last Sunday, I joined their dive trip to Akaroa. Armed with a brand new wetsuit, barely used fins and spear gun, I was excited but really nervous. I'd only ever snorkelled in warm, clear water, I'd never snorkelled in a thick wet suit, I didnt really know how to use the speargun, I didnt know anyone else. I thought the typical girlie novice thoughts, will I look like a complete idiot and embarrass myself in front of the guys?!!!
On the day, the weather was perfect, warm and sunny and the sea was almost flat with just a gentle swell. There were 10 of us in the boat, a mix of scuba divers and spearos of all abilities. Brian, our Dive Master, had that calm, knowledgeable demeanour that just instilled confidence in everyone. What an amazing day it turned out to be. I learnt heaps, and although the visibility wasnt that great, I saw plentiful fish on each dive and all the spearos (including me) caught fish for our dinner and the scuba divers brought back enough crayfish that we shared the catch and all took crayfish home.
What can I say? It took me 8 years to finally get around to spearfishing off the Canterbury coast. Was it worth the wait? Damn right it was. Im just annoyed at myself for waiting so long to give it a go.
Brian, a huge thank you to you and your team and please book me on your next trip!
